Backing Bearing
What is Backing Bearing
Backing bearings are a specialized type of bearing designed to support and position rolling elements under heavy load and high-speed conditions, commonly found in rolling mills and other heavy-duty machinery. These bearings are engineered to withstand axial loads, ensuring smooth and precise movement of rolling bodies such as drums or plates. The primary function of backing bearings is to provide stable support surfaces, reduce friction and wear, thereby enhancing mechanical efficiency and extending the lifespan of the equipment.
Benefits of Backing Bearing
Provide a better lubrication environment
Backing bearings can form a closed annular space to store lubricants, effectively avoiding lubricant leakage and contamination.
Improve the sealing performance of bearings
Backing bearings can play a certain sealing role to prevent external impurities and moisture from entering the bearing, thereby effectively extending the service life of the bearing.
Enhance the bearing's carrying capacity
Backing bearings can increase the rigidity and stability of the bearing seat and improve the bearing's carrying capacity, especially for heavy loads and high speed conditions.
Reduce noise and vibration
Backing bearings can effectively reduce the noise and vibration of bearings and improve the working stability and comfort of bearings.
Simplify the maintenance of bearings
Because the backing bearing can form a closed annular space, the maintenance of rolling bearings or sliding bearings is simpler and more convenient.
Product Features In order to obtain low friction torque, high rigidity, and good rotation accuracy of the bearing, steel balls with small outer diameters are used. The use of hollow shafts ensures light weight and space for wiring. Thin-walled bearings realize an extremely thin bearing section.

In the past 40 years, new mechanical parts have gradually emerged around the world. It consists of inner and outer rings, rolling elements, etc. The slewing bearings produced in my country are mainly introduced by the Tianjin Construction Machinery Research Institute designated by the Ministry of Machinery Industry in the early 1980s.
Thrust Spherical Roller Bearings
Thrust ball bearing composition: Thrust ball bearing consists of three parts: seat washer, shaft washer and steel ball cage assembly. The shaft washer matched with the shaft and the seat ring matched with the housing.
Double Row Tapered Roller Bearings
Tapered roller bearings refer to radial thrust rolling bearings whose rolling elements are tapered rollers. There are two kinds of small cone angle and large cone angle.
Sliding bearings have neither inner and outer rings nor rolling elements, and are generally made of wear-resistant materials. Commonly used in low speed, light load and mechanical rotating parts that are difficult to lubricate and maintain.
According to the force, it is divided into one-way thrust ball bearings and two-way thrust ball bearings. One-way thrust ball bearing can bear one-way axial load. Two-way thrust ball bearing can bear two-way axial load, in which the shaft ring is matched with the shaft.
When the outer ring is particularly thick, it is installed in groups on the stationary shaft to become the bearing of the support roller.

What Are The Different Types Of Backing Bearings
Backing bearings come in various shapes and designs, each tailored to meet specific operational needs in different industrial applications. such as:
Cylindrical Backing Bearings
Cylindrical backing bearings feature a simple design with cylindrical rollers arranged between the inner and outer rings.
Commonly used in rolling mills and other machinery where heavy radial loads and minimal axial movements are prevalent.
Tapered Backing Bearings
Tapered backing bearings consist of tapered rollers arranged between tapered inner and outer ring raceways. The taper angles allow these bearings to handle combinations of radial and axial loads simultaneously.
Ideal for use in positions that require support for both radial and axial forces, such as in gearboxes and drive shafts in heavy machinery.
Spherical Backing Bearings
Spherical backing bearings are equipped with barrel-shaped rollers between spherical inner and outer ring raceways.
Particularly useful in applications where shaft alignment is a challenge or where the shaft may experience significant deflections under load, such as in conveyors and heavy-duty processing equipment.
Special Purpose Backing Bearings
Special-purpose backing bearings are custom-designed to meet unique operational demands that standard bearings cannot fulfill.
These bearings are typically used in highly specialized machinery where standard bearing solutions do not provide the necessary performance, such as in aerospace, military, or advanced research applications.
The Difference Between Backing Bearings and Ordinary Bearings
Different materials
Backing bearings are usually composed of backing materials and bushing materials. Backing materials are usually made of high-strength metal materials, such as brass, bronze, aluminum bronze and aluminum-magnesium alloys. Bushing materials are often made of materials with good wear resistance, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polymer materials or metal materials.
Ordinary bearings are generally made of a single material. Common ordinary bearing materials include bearing alloys, brass, bronze, etc. Their manufacturing process is simple and the price is relatively cheap.
Different structures
The structure of backing bearings is more complicated than that of ordinary bearings. The backing and bushing are divided into two parts, which are connected to each other through machining. In use, the bushing bears the load of the shaft, and the backing plays a role of fixing and supporting.
The structure of ordinary bearings is relatively simple, the overall structure is an integrated structure, and the internal inner hole is lined with lubricating grease to support the movement of the shaft.
Different performance
Backing bearings have better wear resistance, load-bearing capacity and corrosion resistance than ordinary bearings. Since the selection of backing materials and bushing materials is relatively flexible, backing bearings can adapt to higher operating temperatures and working conditions.
Ordinary bearings can generally only meet the requirements under general use conditions and are suitable for low speed, low load and low precision occasions.
Different applications
Backing bearings are generally used in mechanical equipment with high load, high temperature, high speed or poor lubrication conditions, such as metallurgical machinery, water pumps, generator sets, heavy machine tools, etc.
Ordinary bearings are suitable for mechanical equipment with low speed, low load, low precision or general maintenance conditions, such as motors, household appliances, small machine tools, etc.
Three Ways to Identify the Quality of Backing Bearings
Whether the outer packaging is clear In general
Generally, the backing bearings produced by regular manufacturers have their own special designers to design the external packaging, and arrange factories with qualified productionconditions for production. Therefore, the product packaging should be very clear from line to color block without paste.
Whether the steel seal is clear
Each backing bearing product will be printed with its brand words, label, etc. on the backing bearing product body. Although the font is very small, the products produced by regular manufacturers use steel printing technology, and press the font before overheating treatment. Therefore, although the font is small, it is deeply concave and very clear. In general, the font ofcounterfeit products is not only fuzzy, but also floating on the surface due to the rough printing technology. Some of them can even be easily erased by hand or the manual marks are serious.
Is there any noise
Hold the inner sleeve of the backing bearing with your left hand and rotate the outer sleeve with your right hand to listen to whether there is any noise during the operation of the bearing. Dueto the backward production conditions of most counterfeit products and complete manual workshop operation, impurities such as dust and sand will inevitably be mixed in the bearing duringthe production process, so there will be noise or poor operation when the bearing rotates. This is the key to judge whether the products come from the brand products of regular manufacturerswith strict production standards and machine operation.
When selecting a backing bearing, several key factors must be considered to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the bearing in its specific application:
Load Requirements
Understand the magnitude and type of loads (radial, axial, or combined) the bearing will need to support.
Speed Requirements
Consider the operational speed of the machinery. Higher speeds may require bearings with better lubrication features and heat dissipation capabilities.
Misalignment Tolerance
Evaluate the potential for misalignment in the machinery. Bearings like spherical backing bearings are suitable for applications where misalignment might occur.
Environmental Conditions
Assess the working environment, including temperature extremes, presence of corrosive substances, or contamination risks.
Space and Size Constraints
Factor in the physical space available for the bearing. This will affect the size and type of bearing that can be accommodated.
Maintenance and Accessibility
Consider how easily the bearings can be accessed for maintenance and replacement.
Cost-Effectiveness
Analyze the cost implications of different bearing options.
Materials Used In Backing Bearings
Steel Back Bearings
Steel is the traditional material used in back bearings, offering high strength and durability. Steel bearings can carry large loads and are resistant to wear, making them suitable for heavy-duty machinery.
Ceramic Back Bearings
Ceramic back bearings are typically made of materials such as silicon nitride, which are lightweight and harder, making them less susceptible to thermal expansion, which improves their accuracy at varying operating temperatures. In addition, ceramic bearings are highly resistant to corrosion and wear, making them ideal for applications that require high cleanliness and low maintenance.
Hybrid Back Bearings
Hybrid back bearings combine the best attributes of steel and ceramic bearings. They are typically composed of steel rings and ceramic rolling elements. The steel rings provide toughness and load-carrying capacity, while the ceramic balls or rollers provide reduced friction, reduced weight, and increased wear resistance.
Factors Affecting the Hardness of Backing Bearings
Hardness of backing material
The backing material of backing bearings is usually made of cast iron, bronze, steel and aluminum, and its hardness will have a significant impact on the bearing performance. Generally speaking, the higher the hardness of the backing material, the stronger the bearing's load-bearing capacity.
Fatigue strength of backing material
The fatigue strength of the backing material will also affect the hardness of the bearing. Generally speaking, the higher the fatigue strength, the longer the life of the bearing, and it is also beneficial to improve the hardness of the bearing.
Density of backing material
The density of the backing material is also one of the factors affecting the hardness of the bearing. Generally speaking, the higher the density of the material, the greater the hardness of the bearing.

Backing Bearing Structure
The main structural form of backing bearings is double-row or three-row cylindrical roller bearings, with or without integral flanges or retaining rings, and with full roller bearings (without cages) or bearings with cages. The advantages of backing bearings without flanges and movable flanges on the outer ring are simple geometry and high radial load capacity. However, since this type of backing bearing cannot bear axial loads by itself, bronze or engineering plastic thrust washers must be placed between the outer ring and the side of the supporting saddle; backing bearings with flanges (or retaining rings) do not require thrust washers because these bearings are designed to withstand radial and axial forces at the same time.
Backing bearings are precision mechanical parts with very high precision requirements for their own parts. They must be accurately grouped and matched during installation and use to achieve the best operating function. During the use of backing bearings, the following data of each set of bearings needs to be marked and tracked: bearing group number and position number, inner ring force point position, nominal outer diameter size, H value (section height from inner diameter to outer diameter after eliminating radial clearance) height.
Three Lubrication Methods for Backing Bearings
Rolling emulsion lubrication
Rolling emulsion lubrication is a lubrication method for bearings without seals. It requires a large flow of emulsion to quickly achieve lubrication and cooling functions through the bearing. This method is also the most economical and affordable one.
Circulating oil lubrication
It mainly uses lip seals to lubricate support bearings. The lubricating oil flows through the bearing to take away the heat, and then circulates to the lubricating oil base station for cooling and recycling. Lubricating oil with higher viscosity can be used, and the bearing life is greatly improved compared with emulsified lubrication.
Oil-gas lubrication
It mainly uses lip seals to lubricate support bearings, and clean and dry compressed air is used to blow the lubricating oil into the bearing to form pressure in the bearing, so that the lubricating oil adheres to the bearing surface, while preventing foreign matter from invading. The lubrication cost is high, but the lubrication effect is the best.
